Rising 9th Graders Visit NYU Poly

Rising 9th graders from the Eagle Academy for Young Men in the Bronx and Queens Vocational & Technical High School recently spent a Friday afternoon on a guided visit of New York University’s Polytechnic School of Engineering campus in Downtown Brooklyn. The visit featured a presentation, engineering challenge, and campus tour.

Two NYU Poly guides kicked off the afternoon with an overview of the university’s history, which included a few fun facts — like its mascot, now a bobcat but formerly the fighting violets. The guides also spent time reviewing the school’s undergraduate offerings. Students took a special interest in majors like Civil Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, and Electrical Engineering.

When the engineering challenge came around, students quickly formed teams to see who could build the tallest structure out of just marshmallows and spaghetti. Two teams tied with structures the exact same height; one from Eagle Academy and the other from Queens Vocational!
