SEP Gets Ready for New Grade Levels This Fall

As the Software Engineering Pilot turns 3 this summer, we’re excited to grow an additional two grades: 8th and 11th! That means for the 2015-16 school year SEP will be serving 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, and 11th grades—all but 12th.

So what’s in store for our 8th and 11th grade students? Block-based Python, Javascript game design, as well as 3D design and modeling—to name a few—each topic carefully building on students’ understanding of software engineering from previous grades.

Earlier this spring, SEP hired 5 curriculum developers along with a number of its current teachers to develop and give feedback on the new curricula. For 8th grade, SEP teamed up with Codesters, a Manhattan-based Python programming school for kids, to create its Python lessons. SEP Teachers were key in designing Processing, Arduino, HTML, CSS, and Javascript lessons for the upcoming class. For students in 11th grade, SEP sought content experts to create lessons in Javascript web and game design, general back-end, MySQL, MongoDB, as well as 3D design and modeling.

All new curriculum will be introduced and taught at SEP ‘s weeklong professional development series later this month.
